Home of Aperol Spritz. Fashion Capital. Aperitivo. And only a short flight from London.
Hen do’s are increasingly less about willy straws and shots off a butler in the buff. They are becoming classier, more refined affairs. So, if you’re planning on shunning the UK and heading somewhere more exotic, should you consider Milan?
When I was planning my best friends hen do, Milan worked perfectly as we wanted to go aboard but only for a weekend, and on a tight budget. But whilst there was plenty on Madrid and Barcelona, I couldn’t find anything on Milan it as a hen do destination. So why would I recommend it and what should you do?
1. Flights are regular, short and cheap.
This means if people can’t take time off work you can go for just a weekend. The airport is a short cab from the city center so you can go from plane to accommodation to bar in under an hour.
2. It has the most amazing spa ever.
Sit in a tram sauna in a garden surrounded by ancient Spanish stone walls. Walk through a waterfall cave, lie in the tranquility pods and of course spend hours sitting in the many, mean whirlpools. Enjoy the buffet lunch of cold meat, cheese, salad and unlimited wine (yes really) in a room where orchids hang from the ceiling in a tropical paradise. It is the perfect place to chill for a day away from the hustle and bustle of the city center. We loved it so much we canceled our afternoon plans and stayed there till nearly dinner time. All for 54 euros.
3. Go for aperitivo.
Aperitivo is a pre-dinner drink accompanied by free salty nibbles and is traditional in Milan. Depending on how much you eat, if you visit a few places this could tie you over for supper too. It starts at around 7pm.
4. Drinks in the Naviglio canal area.
Explore the cobbled street hopping from bar to bar trying amazing cocktails or even frizantee (a local fizzy red wine). Naviglio gets very popular on a Friday or Saturday night so get their early and enjoy the buzz.
5. Enjoy a harmless flirt.
Italian men are tall, dark and insistently charming. Even if you don’t plan to flirt, they will still flirt with you, and you will inevitably end up flirting back. In Italy, flirting is just a way of life.
6. Visit the cathedral.
Whilst not a traditional hen do activity, the gothic Cathedral in the center of Milan simply stunning, a great backdrop for some hen do photos and an absolute must. Climb the stairs to the top and you can stand among the gothic marble breathing in the panoramic city views. The cathedral is also surrounded by great but more pricey bars – try Oblix or the Aperol bar.
7. Shop at Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Whilst you’re at the Cathedral, pop into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II next to the cathedral. Stare up at the stunning glass dome ceiling whilst window shopping (or genuinely shopping) in the original Prada shop. This is the ultimate stylish shopping location.
8. Make your own pizza and pasta.
What could be more Italian than you learning to make your own pizza, there are lots of places that offer afternoon courses doing this and it means your covered for supper too!
9. Laze by Lake Como
If you’re planning to be in Milan longer than just a weekend, I’d recommend getting a train up to Lake Como. It is the perfect spot for swimming, drinking prosecco and of course hunting for George Clooney who has a house by the lake.
Whilst we didn’t do every activity there was in Milan you can also do wine tasting tours, boat trips on the canal and Segway tours. Milan is never going to be a wild affair like Magaluf, but if you’re looking for something a little more laid back, it could suit you perfectly – just remember to pack some willie straws.
